Varvara Esmenova

BIO
Varvara Esmenova (Far East, Russia,1988)

Born in Far East, nowadays Varvara lives and works in Saint Petersburg. She creates her art pieces in mixed technique of etching and author's print. Onward, Esmenova tells her story so we can understand better the idea of her works on paper:

"Probably worth starting with the fact that at the time of the creation of this series, I was a girl sincerely in love with my country... very controversial, strange, wild ... For me, it was interesting to observe not only the ceremonial, frivolous side of Russian culture, but also the gloomy, sometimes even eerie side of Russian reality. I was fascinated by such colossal contrasts. How to ride a roller coaster. Up and then abruptly into a cliff. From the magnificent halls of the State Hermitage to the spoiled "paradnaya" (front doors in St.Petersburg slang) . What a range! This is what I wanted to fit into my work."

Obscurum per Obscurius
A hawk and a mourning dove! Reichstag and Bastille —
The sleep and the wakefulness! Demon and Lord!
Lily in champagne and champagne in a lily —
The lighthouse of oneness in sea of discord!

Igor Severyanin translated by Ilya Shambat.
"I tried to find some balance. Naked female nature served as a tool thanks to which, it seems to me, I managed to connect everything together. To achieve harmony. I was always interested in working with the human body. Neither landscapes nor portraits have ever particularly attracted me."
