Francisca Sousa (Lisbon, Portugal, 1992)

Francisca Sousa was born in Portugal and has a bachelor's degree in painting and a master's degree in Multimedia Arts. She finished a study program in London at Central Saint Martins, which appeared to be an important moment in her artistic life when she started to develop a higher awareness of cultural matters and gender issues. Sousa's artistic approach is based on interdisciplinary mixing of different media – painting, performance art, video, and illustration – and mainly focused on violence, discipline, and the dynamics of sex life.

Her artwork takes a critical view of intimate, social, and cultural issues. Gender violence, the submissive body, and positive sexuality are her main concerns. Through erotic drawings, paintings, and other media the audience can unfold a feminine view on male domination and patriarchy. Sousa found a gentle way of working with these themes: from a smooth color palette to circular shapes, where playful irony can be seen and felt somehow voyeuristic. She invites the viewer to enter an unknown universe of delicate bodies and important discussions.

"Quarantine Delights"
The series shows the intimate moments of masturbation, lust, and female dominance. Especially during quarantine and COVID-19 times, while sexual desires increased and any social meetings were prohibited, Sousa felt a greater need to share her ideas and thoughts regarding sexuality and self-pleasure.
"We can't go on like this in a world full of taboos and where sexual symposiums are almost none. We really need to talk about sex and do more erotic art – in the end, sex is one of our major needs."
